Childhood
autism is much more wide-spread in Britain than was previously thought,
according to a survey of school-age children published today.
One per cent of children aged nine and ten examined at a hospital in London
were found to be autistic or to have related disorders. This suggests
that autism is 25 times more common than the four to five cases per 10,000
people which was the accepted number in the 1990’s.
It is still unknown whether the number of children born with autism is rising.
The higher levels are believed to reflect a large number of cases that would
previously have gone unrecognised.
In previous years, most children who had autism would perhaps have some
learning difficulties, but now autism is being recognised in young people who
don’t have learning difficulties and, in fact, are very capable.

Indian army engineers yesterday rescued a six year old boy who spent 50 hours trapped at the bottom of a 60ft. well.
The child, who is known by only one name, Prince, was brought out by soldiers.
Villagers said that construction workers had left a partially constructed well-shaft temporarily covered with sacking. The child accidentally stepped on it while playing with friends. Fortunately, the bottom of the well was covered with soft sand but the shaft was only 16 inches in diameter. Engineers had to dig a parallel shaft and then a connecting passageway.
Rescue teams passed biscuits, chocolates and bottles of glucose drink down the shaft and monitored the boy on closed circuit television.
Special prayers were said for the boy in temples, mosques, churches and Sikh places of worship across all India.

San Francisco, often foggy and cool, reached 30.5°C.
Demand for power reached record levels on Saturday and there were some power failures.

Despite ever greater competition from television, the internet and Pods for people’s free time, book sales in Britain have increased considerably. Although in the USA book sales were fairly quiet, in Britain they rose by 19%.
The rise was found particularly in books about food and drink, crafts, photography and travel which are areas of practical need, passion and enthusiasm.
Despite the improvement, publishing houses know that they must adapt to the internet and they are starting to provide e-books and podcasts.
16 to 24 year olds are turning away from newspapers as well as from television and radio in favour of the internet, and it is these people that the publishing houses want to reach. The internet plays a central role in our daily lives and so it is important to move with the times.
